Raise the game

A court built for basketball can become a free place to play, a reason to get active, and a space where people of every age and background can connect, grow and belong.

Across the country, Hoopsfix Foundation is bringing public basketball courts back to life.

Why basketball

The game
that reaches
everyone

Basketball is already one of the biggest sports in the country.
It just doesn’t always look like it from the outside.

children and young people in England play basketball every week. Only football is played by more under-16s.1

young basketball players in England are girls.1

of basketball players in England are from ethnically diverse communities, the highest of any team sport.?

Nearly 1.1 million children and young people in England play basketball every week. Only football is played by more under-16s.

Basketball reaches the young people that sport too often misses. It is played in the neighbourhoods with the least, and by young people from Black, Asian and ethnically diverse communities, the groups national data shows are least likely to be active.

It is also the easiest sport to say yes to. No fees, no kit list, no team sheet, no booking system. One ball and one hoop is enough for a game of one or a game of ten.

That is why the court matters. For many young people in our cities, the local court is the only free, open space built for them. When it is cracked, unlit or broken, the game has nowhere to go.

The players are already there. Too many of the courts are not.

The need

Why courts matter

  • 320,000+

adults (16+) playing at least twice in 28 days; 3rd most-played adult team sport after football and cricket.4

  • 80-90%

of London's roughly 759 free outdoor courts are in disrepair; only 19% of players rate facilities good or excellent.5

  • £10M

invested by government and NBA in grassroots basketball facilities, £5m each. Proof others are backing the game.6

  • 93%

of players would strongly prefer dedicated basketball facilities.7
